Unique features: This traditional stucco manor home is also known by another name: The House That Shredded Wheat Built. It was constructed in 1904 by Henry Perky, who, a decade earlier, invented the popular breakfast cereal that earned him fame and the means to put down roots in northern Baltimore County. The near-20-acre estate, which he called Oread (after a wood nymph in Greek mythology), was his 22-room residence but briefly: Perky, 62, died on a hot day in 1906 after downing a glass of brandy and then sliding into an ice-cold bath in his tub. His dream house — and, perhaps, his spirit — survives.

The four-story home offers five bedrooms, five full baths, a secluded setting and an air of mystery — during World War II, it was reportedly used as a boot camp for spies. There are five fireplaces, a dramatic staircase and a gourmet kitchen, beneath which runs a tunnel leading to a hidden wine cellar that may have served as a clandestine speakeasy during Prohibition.

The property is completely ensconced in greenery. Several heirloom apple trees embellish the landscape. There’s an in-ground pool, tennis court, circular driveway and a car barn with five garage spaces.
