A 9-year-old died after an incident Thursday at the water park at Hersheypark.

CEO John Lawn said in a statement that lifeguards noticed the child in distress at The Boardwalk, and performed an immediate rescue. Lifeguards, on-site first responders and medical personnel then performed “continuous, coordinated life-saving efforts.”

The child was taken to Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, where they did not recover, Lawn said.

He said the park extends its condolences, and added they will not release personal details about the child at this time.

Lawn said the park will thoroughly investigate the incident and honor the memory of the guest by continuing to focus on guest safety.

The Boardwalk, open from Memorial Day to Labor Day, has 16 unique water rides, including water slides and a lazy river, according to the park’s website.

Hersheypark, which opened in 1906, is in Derry Township, Dauphin County.

Township police said Friday morning that investigators are helping Hersheypark and the county coroner’s office with their review of the incident. The investigation is still early, and they were still gathering information on it.
