With today’s gluttonous demand for energy, nuclear is a realistic concept. Yet concerns about radioactive storage and plant failure still exist. I was unaware Baltimore is a “nuclear free zone” (“Baltimore and Takoma Park: Nuclear free zones,” July 19). How ironic Constellation Energy is located here and operates Calvert Cliffs Clean Energy Center, a nuclear facility, in Lusby.

Our entire life depends on electricity and those needs are expanding due to artificial intelligence and personal devices. What scares me the most, which is rarely mentioned, is the effort by hackers to disrupt our electrical grid.  The United States has many enemies, and cyber warfare is a reality. No matter how advanced our protection, the bad guys strive to find a way around it.

A major blackout would disrupt our entire way of life. It’s time to create a civil defense should this happen. I recall the 1977 New York power failure — within hours, there was chaos, looting and arson in that city. The digital world of today did not exist then. Now, we’d be looking at the collapse of our society.
