Most of the Baltimore region is under a flood watch after heavy rainfall from fast-moving storms moved through the area Tuesday afternoon, delaying the Orioles game at Camden Yards and leaving over 6,000 residents without power.
In Anne Arundel and Harford counties, roads were closed from downed trees and power lines. In Baltimore County, a fire in Middle River was believed to be caused by a lightning strike.
As of 9 p.m., Baltimore Gas and Electric Co. said about 6,600 customers were without service, requiring more than 300 restoration jobs. In an emailed statement, the utility said “severe storms caused extensive electric system damage from fallen tree limbs and downed wires throughout BGE’s service area.”
About 80% of customers will have power restored by noon Wednesday, BGE said. The company expects the “vast majority” to have service returned within 24 hours, depending on the weather.
The National Weather Service has issued a flood watch again for Wednesday, from noon to midnight, warning that flash flooding is possible due to the excessive rainfall.
A flash flood warning for the Harford County area ended at 8:45 p.m.
Baltimore County Fire Department responded to a call for a basement fire in Middle River around 6:30 p.m. Tuesday. Fire officials said the incident was possibly caused by a lightning strike. There were no injuries reported.
