I have always been an admirer of former U.S. Rep. Beto O’Rourke until I read the article about his recent town hall in Baltimore (“Beto O’Rourke talks Texas redistricting, DOGE layoffs in Baltimore town hall,” July 21). He lost me when he denounced United States involvement in Israel and called for an independent sovereign Palestinian state.
O’Rourke should brush up on the realities of the situation in the Middle East. After Oct. 7, how can Israel trust Palestinians to form a sovereign state? How will that prevent the repeat of another Oct. 7? Whom do you negotiate with on the Palestinian side to form such a state? Hamas? The Palestinian Authority? Neither is reliable or trustworthy.
No, the formation of an independent, peace-loving Palestinian state will have to wait for another generation or two until feelings cool down and responsible Palestinian leaders can be found.
