I read the story of the nurse who was an angel to grieving grandparents (“The angel who touched my life,” July 5), and it reminded me of an incident that to this day I cannot explain even to myself.

I was traveling from one military post to another with my wife, five children and two dogs in the car on a local back road. I was behind a tanker truck and way too eager to pass it. I looked around it and saw clear road, so I pulled out to pass the truck. Well, I got about halfway past the truck when, in my lane, I was horrified to see another truck approaching me with nowhere to turn off the road.

Both trucks were blowing their horns, and I really thought my family and I were going to die, when out of nowhere, a road appeared to my left.  With little time to spare, I swerved onto that road as both trucks whizzed by, blowing their horns. I finally stopped my car and just about cried at the thought of what could have been.

I know one thing for sure: That road to the left was not there before, and then out of nowhere, the road appeared and saved me and my family. An angel? Maybe God himself?? I really don’t know. All I know is that I am here today at the age of 81 thanks to a superior power. There are those who don’t believe who will say the road was there, and in my panic I did not see it. Possible? Maybe! Probable? No, that road was not there.

I still am so thankful and remember that day like it was yesterday. I truly believe there are angels among us.
