MIAMI GARDENS — Miami Dolphins offensive tackle Bayron Matos was injured at the end of Wednesday’s opening practice in training camp and transported by helicopter to a hospital, the team announced. He’s in stable condition, according to a team spokesperson.
Matos (pronounced BYE-rone MAH-tos) was injured in an inadvertent collision with a teammate at the tail end of the final play of practice.
“Really unfortunate situation with injuries,” offensive tackle Austin Jackson said. “It’s just a really heartbreaking part of the game, honestly. Really tough.”
His injury isn’t the reason practice ended early, the team said. Practice ended with the session lasting fewer than 90 minutes.
Matos, a 6-foot-7, 334-pound native of the Dominican Republic, joined the Dolphins in 2024 as a member of the international player pathway program. He spent the entire season on the practice squad and re-signed in January.
He attended the University of South Florida after the 2020 season after transferring from New Mexico. He attended Hamilton Heights (Tenn.) Christian Academy.
Matos is a longshot to make the 53-man regular-season roster but got a decent amount of repetitions Wednesday.
The Dolphins are stocked at offensive tackle among starters Jackson and Patrick Paul and reserves Jackson Carman, Ryan Hayes, Kion Smith and Larry Borom.
