Now, he sings opera."},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/hakeemhenderson.com\/\">Hakeem Henderson<\/a> was barely old enough to walk when he began carrying around a blue toy microphone. It was clear even then what his future career would be.<\/p>\n<p>In September, the 26-year-old Baltimorean will be a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.kennedy-center.org\/education\/opportunities-for-artists\/pre-professional-artist-training\/wno-cafritz-young-artists\/\">Cafritz Young Artist<\/a> with Washington National Opera, one of the most competitive programs for emerging opera singers in the U.S.<\/p>\n<p>But it wasn\u2019t always easy being a Black teenage male in the Belair-Edison neighborhood singing music written hundreds of years ago by European men wearing wigs.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI definitely got pushback,\u201d Henderson said. \u201cI was a social outcast in many ways.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Nonetheless, he persevered, graduating from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bsfa.org\/\">Baltimore School for the Arts<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.morgan.edu\/\">Morgan State University<\/a>, and later earning a master\u2019s degree from England\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rncm.ac.uk\/\">Royal Northern College of Music.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Oh, and did we mention that Henderson is also a composer? A song that he co-wrote when he was in his teens was featured in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.netflix.com\/title\/80117554\">Netflix<\/a> television series created by the filmmaker Spike Lee.<\/p>\n<p>\u201dThe story that my parents tell is that when my mother was pregnant with me, my father put speakers playing jazz music to my mother\u2019s belly,\u201d Henderson said, \u201cand I came out singing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Baltimoreans will have a chance to appreciate Henderson\u2019s talents July 31,  when he participates in a free outdoor concert at Mount Vernon Place sponsored by Maryland Opera.<\/p>\n<p><em>The following interview has been edited for clarity and length.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>Congratulations on your selection as a Cafritz Young Artist.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Thank you. This is an initiative to help up-and-coming opera singers prepare for international careers. For two years, I will cover [understudy] principal roles in Washington Opera productions and possibly sing small roles. It will put me in an entirely different professional marketplace than I am in now, where I hopefully will be able to earn a living wage.<\/p>\n<p><strong>How did you decide on a career in opera?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I originally wanted to have a career as a pop singer. I didn\u2019t really fall in love with opera until I was 17 and was studying music theory and history. I was listening to Claude Debussy\u2019s Arabesque No. 1, and something kind of clicked. The harmonies brought me so much joy. Classical music remains is still in some ways inaccessible to my generation. I\u2019m going into this career because I want to make opera exciting.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You also still perform popular music.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Singing pop and musical theater is freeing for me. Classical music can be very linear and one-dimensional.\u00a0 There is a certain way it should be approached. But pop and musical theater [are] still evolving. Just look at \u201cHamilton.\u201d You can make that music your own.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What is it like to be a Black teenager who sings opera?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>There were people who presented themselves as wanting to help me but said things that were demeaning and disrespectful. When I started at School for the Arts, it was my first time in a structured environment. \u00a0I didn\u2019t know a C note from a G, I didn\u2019t know how to organize my time, and I struggled with my attention span. I almost flunked out my freshman year. It was very grueling, and some nights I cried. But my father talked to the school and explained that I was neurodivergent, and they arranged to give me more time to take tests and learn. It made all the difference. Now, some of the people who gave me failing grades have become my colleagues.<\/p>\n<p><strong>What was college like for you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I was very anxious about what the future would hold for me, and Morgan was not even my first choice. I was rejected from Peabody [Conservatory]. But, it was a very fruitful experience. Many doors opened for me at Morgan that I wasn\u2019t expecting. I sang in the Morgan State Choir under Eric Conway, and when we traveled internationally, I sang a solo.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You had a professional debut that most singers only dream about. Performing at the Edinburgh International Festival is a little like going from school straight to Broadway. How did that happen?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Someone asked Dr. Conway if he had a singer who could perform in \u201cWest Side Story\u201d at the festival, and he recommended me. I was in the Jets ensemble, and we performed with the Scottish Chamber Orchestra under the direction of Sir John Eliot Gardiner. I had a ball. Everyone was very generous. It was one of the best times of my life.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re also a composer. Wasn\u2019t some of your music featured on the TV series based on Spike Lee\u2019s \u201cShe\u2019s Gotta Have It\u201d?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>When I was 18 or 19, my mother sent me a link that Spike was looking for original music for his television show. I didn\u2019t know who the man was. I had never seen any of his films, but my brother Nazeeh is a writer and a poet, and we often collaborate. We wrote a song about my first love called \u201cI Wish to Hold You Again.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t think it was my best work.<\/p>\n<p>But in 2018, I was in the car with my mother and stepfather on the way to a gig and I got a call. He said, \u201cThis is Spike. I\u2019m calling to congratulate you. You won.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Our song was used in episode 8 of that season.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you plan on doing more composing in the future?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I also co-wrote a song called \u201cKeep on Movin\u2019 On\u201d with Luis Sullivan, a fellow student at the Royal Northern College of Music, and it subsequently aired on BBC Radio.<\/p>\n<p>At some point, I want to get back to composing.
