For much of the 1900s, the ‘community room’ in the Charles Carroll – Westminster Hotel, built in 1898 by George W. Albaugh 117 East Main Street, was the center of the social and business community in Westminster. The building, pictured here from a postcard from approximately 1900, anchored the historic 100-block of East Main Street in Westminster. The block of buildings include the Ann Elizabeth Babylon House at 123 East Main, the Crout House at 127 East Main, and the Methodist Protestant Church at 129 East Main. Longstanding Taneytown official Darryl Hale served in the United States Marine Corps and was honorably discharged as a Corporal. He was an exemplary Marine, serving during Operation Desert Shield and Storm. While in service he received many honors, to include; Southwest Asia Service Medal, with 2 Stars, a Navy Unit Citation, USS Portland, a Kuwait Liberation Medal, a Meritorious Unit Commendation, a Navy Unit Commendation, with 1 star, and a Combat Action Ribbon. Dayhoff: Darryl Hale remembered as a ‘trusted voice’ in Taneytown government

At the time of his death, Hale was serving as the Director of Planning and Zoning and Code Enforcement for the City of Taneytown.

Over the years, three native sons of Pleasant Valley have lost their lives while in service to our country. They were honored by the community at the June 1, 1947 dedication of the war memorial in town. The monument was subsequently moved to the Pleasant Valley Cemetery and serves as the focal point of the annual Memorial Day ceremonies. In 1947 a thick 40-page program for the ceremonies was dedicated to three of the valley’s native sons who were killed in World War II: Lt. Richard S. Brown, Pvt. William O. Hiner, and Lt. John D. The New Windsor Fire Department is proud to announce that the department has signed a contract with Seagrave Fire Apparatus for the construction of a new fire engine to replace our current Engine 101. According to a media release on May 5, 2025 by Assistant Fire Chief David Coe, The cost of the "new" Engine 101 is approximately $1.3 million. Remarkably, this project is being funded entirely through fundraising events such as the upcoming annual carnival May 20-24, 2025. Dayhoff: Great community events are scheduled in Carroll County this summer

One of the celebrated family traditions in Carroll County has been the fire company carnivals held almost every week through the summer.

Wasyl Palijczuk, in his office at Western Maryland College in March 1989, was an art professor at Western Maryland College – now McDaniel College, for over 30 years. Palijczuk has died at the age of 90. Palijczuk was born in 1934 in Dzhuriv, Ukraine, a small village near the foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. He came to Baltimore after WWII.
